As September comes to an end, my sister is rarely far from my thoughts.  I wasn’t sure how I would spend the anniversary of her loss.  Circumstances gave me little choice.  I will be flying home from my grandmother’s memorial service in Iowa on the 29th and  I will spend the weekend remembering both brilliant women.

Life continues to be busy, which has been good. Â After the sailing trip, I took a trip to Missoula to spend time with my uncle, aunt, and cousin in my grandfather’s old house. Â We had a great time hiking, rafting, and lounging while enjoying plenty of raspberries from the garden.

Shortly after arriving back my third adorable nephew was born. Â At a week old, he spent 5 days in a hospital with a fever and I spent some time entertaining the older two.

September 11-13, I participated in the Breast Cancer 3-Day for the seventh time. Â I’ve walked four times but I was crewing for my third time this year. Â I enjoy driving the sweep van, cheering walkers on, and supporting walkers who have a hard time. Â The 2009 Seattle 3-Day raised over 5.5 million dollars for breast cancer research and education.

I haven’t been home much this summer. Â Shortly after school ended, I attended a photo class on Mt. Rainier for a few days. Â Hiking in the snow above Paradise was the most fun I’ve ever had earning continuing education credits.

I went up to Friday Harbor for a few days and played golf, watched Orcas swim and flip about, relaxed, and enjoyed the sunshine.

A day and a half after returning from the San Juans, I was off to meet my parents for a trip to China to see Beijing, Xian, Shanghai and the solar eclipse. Â It was quite an adventure and I’ll add an album when I can.

After spending a very hot and humid 10 days in China, I came home only to leave again during a huge heat wave in the Northwest. I took a float plane to BC where I met some friends on their sailboat and sailed down with them to Friday Harbor.

Our last day of  my sailing vacation was my sister’s birthday.  She’s always on my mind. Every place I went, I thought of how much she enjoyed adventure and would have loved (or hated) each experience.
The Blake quote from an old birthday card she sent me often goes through my head. Â Cindy was always encouraging me to live each moment. Though I’ve never had the number of activities she managed to fill her day with, I try to appreciate the beauty and contrasts around me. “To see the word in a grain of sand and heaven in a wild flower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand and eternity in an hour.”

It has been a long nine months without my sister. Â This time of year I’m usually busy packing to go off on another extraordinary adventure with her. Â This summer my parents are my travel partners and we’re headed west to China. Â I thought should catch up a bit before then.
This winter, I learned to play my sister’s cello, had lots of fun enjoying the excessive amounts of snow that fell on Seattle, and spent Christmas with my family on Whidbey.

In February, I spent a wonderful week soaking up the warmth and sunshine at my cousin’s house in Hawaii.

I also went to North Carolina for a quite hot and lovely week and had a chance to visit my aunt, uncle, and cousin who live there.

Spring in Seattle seemed sunnier than usual and we spent a lot of time outside and had a few chances to sail and visit my adorable nephews.

My life will never be the same without my sister, but it does go on. Â I’m am looking forward to all I have planned this summer, adventures both big and small. Â I just wish she could have been here to enjoy them.

Cynthia Soroos
July 31, 1974- September 29th, 2008
Pictures from a life well lived but far too short.
This website is full of the memories I shared with my sister, reminders of all the fantastic and crazy times we spent together. We were supposed to be able to laugh and talk about it all well into old age and there are so many more adventures we should have shared. This page is just one side of her, the part of her life she shared with me. Please feel free to leave a favorite memory of Cynthia in the comments section.
Thank you to everyone who has supported my family and me in Cambridge and in our home towns. Clearly this is the worst time of our lives and it means so much to us to hear your memories of Cindy and to be surrounded by your love and compassion. We are so grateful for your kindness.
If you would like to email me without posting a comment, feel free to contact me by email at my first name at my last name dot net. It has been good to hear from so many of you. Also, if you happen to have any pictures of my sister, I would love it if you would share them with me.

I know the links to pictures are subtle, I’m not sure if it can be changed. A word or two in each description is in blue (usually the name of the place I’ve been), and that blue word is the link to the pictures.

After our vacation together, Cindy flew home and I spent a few days in Paris, staying near the Sacre Coeur and training for the 60 mile 3-Day Breast Cancer walk by walking from one end of the city to the other (as well as circling many times in between). In addition, I spent an extraordinary amount of time lounging in parks, eating crepes, and taking pictures of tourists (I also let one take a similar cheesy shot of me).
Here are a few pictures that are not yet captioned.
